Back and Forth Lacrosse Battle Favors Benedictine

MILWAUKEE – With two games left and three MLC tournament spots still up for grabs, men's lacrosse took on Benedictine at Viets Field looking to snag one of those coveted slots. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep the goal for goal pace that dominated much of the first half, falling to the Eagles in a defensive battle on Tuesday night.

Benedictine – 12
MSOE Raiders – 9

Benedictine (9-4, 7-2 MLC) kicked off the scoring just 39 second into the first quarter when Brogan Hall put a shot past his brother Colin Hall (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Benet Academy) to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead. MSOE (7-7, 7-3 MLC) was forced to play catch up from that point on. Harrison Davies (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho / Coeur D'Alene) scored one of his three goals to tie things up at 1-1, but another Eagles score gave them the 2-1 lead heading into quarter number two. The Raiders would tie up the game twice in the second frame thanks to goals from Zach Rau (DeForest, Wis. / DeForest Area) and Will Eveland (Lake Villa, Ill. / Warren Township), but each time Benedictine would answer back. With the score tied at 3-3, the Eagles rattled off four straight goals and created enough distance between the two teams to prevent another tie. MSOE started to get momentum on their side with two goals to end the second quarter, but it was broken up due to the intermission.

The Red & White were down 8-5 heading into the second half but weren't able to make up any ground. Each team went on to score three goals in the third quarter, with Benedictine outscoring the Raiders 2-1 in the fourth. The Raiders outshot their opponents 46-36 but were only about to get 20 of those shots on goal. That coupled with 25 total turnovers prevented the offense from getting into a good rhythm. MSOE was able to dominate in the faceoff circle, winning 18 of the 24 matchups, but in the end still fell 12-9.

Benedictine is just one team that the Raiders haven't been able to get by. The Eagles lead the series 6-1, with the Raiders only victory coming way of a 9-5 win back on April 26, 2017.

Harrison Davies – 3 goals, 12 shots, 1 ground ball
Zach Rau – 3 goals, 9 shots
Bennett Harris (Wales, Wis. / Kettle Moraine) – 7 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers
Jacob Killian (Orchard Lake, Mich. / St. Mary's Prep) – 1 ground ball, 4 caused turnovers

All eyes will be on Saturday's regular season finale against Marian (and a little bit of scoreboard watching) to see if the Red & White will be playing beyond Senior Day. Game time from Viets Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
