Raiders Use Dramatics and Pitching for DH Sweep

MILWAUKEE – They weren't going to score 37 runs in every doubleheader, but all that matters is that you score one more than your opponent. MSOE softball used an RBI single in the first game against Wisconsin Lutheran to walk it off before the Raiders starting pitching took over in game two, leading to a sweep of the Warriors at the MSOE Athletic Field on a beautiful Thursday afternoon.

Game One
Wisconsin Lutheran – 6
MSOE Raiders – 7

Game Two
Wisconsin Lutheran – 0
MSOE Raiders – 5

MSOE (11-5, 2-0 NACC) got off to a quick start in game one, scoring three runs right away, two off a Kara McKenna (Downers Grove, Ill/South) triple that plated her teammates. Unfortunately, starting pitcher Emily Wiederholt (Cuba City, Wis./Cuba City) gave up that cushion in the top of the second, as Wisconsin Lutheran (9-5, 0-4 NACC) came back with three of their own to tie things up. Each team would trade a run in the fourth and fifth innings before the Warriors scored two in the top of the sixth to give them a 6-4 lead. The Raiders pulled within one in the bottom of the inning, before Julia Marsh (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) and Rachel Ziemba (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) singled in the bottom of the seventh to bring home a run each to win the ballgame 7-6.

Game two was the complete opposite. Starter Lorrin Pondo (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) was in total control in the contest, going all seven innings without giving up a run. Pondo also struck out four and allowed only one inning where WLC had more than one baserunner. Four Raider players contributed RBI's in the 5-0 victory, and all but two had at least one hit. With the win, the Red & White have now won five straight games and started off their conference season 2-0.

The ladies of MSOE softball must like to get coach Kyle Knoblauch's pulse racing. The Raiders have had two walk-off wins in the past week to go along with an extra inning loss.

Emma Megal – 4 hits, 1 run
Lauren Stefanczyk – 3 hit, 2 RBIs, 2 runs
Emily Snow – 4 hits, 4 RBIs, 1 run
Lorrin Pondo – 7.0 innings pitched, 3 hits, 4 strikeouts, no runs allowed

The Red & White will be back in action on Sunday, heading to Concordia-Wisconsin for a doubleheader starting at Noon.
