CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The MSOE triathlon team was back on the course yesterday morning, marking the first time they had competed in back to back weekends this season. The course was an unusual one as well, with a bike segment that was two miles longer than normal and a swimming portion that was half of what the student-athletes usually experience. Neither of these factors phased the Raiders though, as they came in second for the second straight meet at the Tri the Illini on Sunday.
2nd out of 5 (21 points)
One week after she came in third place at the MSOE Splash N' Dash, Rachel Ruona moved one rung up the ladder at this week's event. Her total time of 1:07:57.2 was good for a second-place finish, crossing the line behind only the collegiate and overall race winner from North Central College. Ruona put together a 5:45.6 swim, a 40:54.8 bike, and a 20:00.8 run for her best individual finish of the season.
- This week's race consisted of a 14-mile biking course, a five-kilometer run, and a 300-meter swim.
- Kiki Davis and Lauren Campbell both finished in the top 15 as well, with Davis coming in 10th and Campbell crossing the line in 14th.
- Every Raider that participated had a season best or personal record on their 5K times, with some taking off 30 seconds or more.
- The event was a non-draft bike competition, which is a very different format than when they compete in draft-legal racing. Non-draft biking allows the participants to work with those around them to go faster on the bike, which can lead can make a major impact on the race outcome.
Next up for the Red & White is the East Regional Qualifier in Huddleston, Virginia. Race time is scheduled for 11:00 am central.
